About the CRG

The Columbia Refugee Garden is located behind Broadway Christian Church in Columbia, MO. Currently we are building a new garden next to the community garden already in place. Refugees will use this plot to grow food for their families as well as other refugees in their community.

The garden will provide opportunities for these men and women to pull themselves out of poverty while maintaining their farming heritage. It will be an outlet for them to connect to their past and what they know while living in an unknown country and city.

As of today , we are currently in Phase I (see picture: garden being planted). The garden has been doubled and the refugees are planting now and harvesting in the coming weeks.

Phase II will involve developing more land to provide refugees with enough produce to sell in CSA’s (Community Supported Agriculture), at Farmer’s Markets, or to local restaurants. The refugees will place a portion of the income earned into their own plot for next year’s growing season. The remaining income will be kept by the refugees themselves. RIS will earn a $0 profit from this project. (See Sponsor a Project under the “How You Can Help” tab for more funding information).

Phase III, will expand the garden to create an orchard as well as walking trails that will enable Columbia residents to see a working farm and crops from all across the globe right here in our city

But for now, we are taking the first, baby steps. And hopefully and prayerfully this blog’s page will grow and change just as the garden and refugees will.

Hello CRG,

I love what you are doing. I am an ELL teacher at Paxton Keeley. I have many of the kids from your garden area.
A friend and I would love to help in some way. We have some ideas of ways to support the project. We would also like to donate some tools too.
Please call email me and let me know anyway I can help.
Again, great project!
